GS1 QR code vs classic QR code: the invisible error that can block your sales

22 January 2026 - The QRanberi Team

For years, QR codes were used as a simple marketing tool. Today, the confusion between a classic QR code and a GS1 QR code creates a major risk for brands.

The false friend: the classic marketing QR code

Printing the wrong QR code today can make your product unsellable tomorrow.

A classic QR code contains only a URL. It is completely invisible to checkout systems and logistics tools.

The GS1 QR Code (Digital Link): the DNA of modern commerce

The GS1 QR code is a structured URL that embeds the standard identifiers of global trade.

Why a classic QR code can block your sales

The false comfort of the double QR code

On many packaging designs, two QR codes now coexist: a GS1 QR code for the checkout and a "marketing" QR code for the consumer.

GS1 allows that coexistence, but it is not neutral. Best practices are clear: a secondary QR code must not be placed less than 4 cm away from the GS1 QR code in order to avoid scan confusion.

In practice, that constraint complicates design, overloads the front of the pack, and weakens overall readability. The more codes there are, the more the message becomes blurry for both consumers and in-store teams.

2027: a deadline that leaves no room for error

Starting in 2027, the checkout systems of major retailers will evolve to read QR codes compliant with the GS1 standard. A classic marketing QR code, even if perfectly readable by a smartphone, will not be recognized as a product identifier.

The risk is simple: a non-compliant product may be rejected at checkout or even at listing stage. What is now a graphic choice will tomorrow become a commercial prerequisite.

The risk of a frozen QR code

A marketing QR code is generally static. It points to a campaign or content that is bound to evolve. Once printed, it can no longer be corrected.

The outcome is well known: packaging still in circulation, but a QR code that leads nowhere. A degraded experience, a broken promise, and a medium that instantly loses value.

The enhanced QR code: two pillars, one logic

Identify without compromise

The GS1 QR code ensures product identification: checkout, inventory management, traceability, and recalls. It forms the common technical foundation for every player in commerce.

Engage consumers and strengthen the brand

This is where QRanberi comes in. From a single GS1 QR code, the brand can deploy a full digital experience: enriched product information, engagement, direct consumer relationship, stronger branding, and first-party data collection.

The QR code is no longer limited to informing. It becomes a controlled communication channel, scalable over time and perfectly suited to mobile behavior.

QRanberi automates the creation of the GS1 QR code, provides an optimized mobile page, and guarantees GS1 compliance.

One QR code. Every use. Zero risk.
